Humboldt and Del Norte Counties are designated as Physician Manpower Shortage Areas. This means that if you decide to relocate to this area you may very well qualify for a variety of medical school loan forgiveness programs:

HPSA SHORTAGE AREAS

DEL NORTE PHYSICIAN LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM.
This program is administrated through the Wild Rivers Community Foundation and is available to a new physician who locates and serves in Del Norte County in a medical field of need. This would be for a 4 year commitment. Preference is of course given to people who are likely to stay longer than the 4 years. Someone with previous ties to the area would get preference. The MD/DO would have to be willing to accept all types of insurance including Medi-Cal and not refuse payment due to lack of. This program would pay for any student loans up to a maximum of 50K a year or 200K over four years. The payments would be made directly to the financial institution of record.
